Arnheim's Art Theory Of Visual Thinking And Criticism

Arnheim is the representative of Gestalt Psychology and the master of the integration of Gestalt Psychology and Art.His artistic thought has many perspectives,such as philosophy,psychology,empirical science,aesthetics,etc.It also reveals the lofty pursuit of artistic noumenon beauty.His artistic thought has methodological guiding significance for current artistic practice.It is a rare treasure in the field of artistic thought.At present,there are many domestic research results on Arnheim's artistic theory,but the depth of his theory is still not enough.In view of this,this paper takes Arnheim's "visual thinking" as a new clue of his artistic thought to cut in and elucidate,trying to grasp the essence of his artistic thought.Thesis is divided into four chapters.The first chapter introduces the background of Arnheim's visual thinking artistic thought,starting from the social and historical background and theoretical background,to grasp the relationship between Arnheim's visual thinking artistic theory and the factors of the times and its theoretical origin in psychology and philosophy.Chapter two discusses the abstractness of image in visual perception by analyzing three aspects: perception,image and abstraction.Because abstraction makes images have the function of communicating perception and rationality,vision has the power of thinking.Visual thinking is image thinking.Chapter three analyses Arnheim's view of art from the perspective of visual thinking theory,mainly through two aspects: artistic expression and artistic value.The core of artistic expression lies in whether it conveys visual power.By analyzing the nature,production and operation of visual power,Arnheim's artistic position of pursuing human reality is elaborated,thus the role of artistic value in treatment and education is derived.Chapter Four elaborates Arnheim's theory of artistic criticism from the basic pattern and composition principle of visual motive force combined with specific works of art.By investigating Arnheim's theory of visual thinking and artistic conception,we can determine whether there is visual motivation or not,which can be said to be the criterion of his artistic criticism.Finally,the author rethinks Arnheim's artistic criticism and concludes that Arnheim's artistic criticism is a kind of artistic criticism with integrated experience,unity of form and meaning and Chinese and Western perspectives.
