With the advancement of telecommunication technology and the deepening of international business,audio-conference interpreting,with its advantages of low cost,high efficiency,flexibility and convenience,has been more and more frequently used in business contacts at home and abroad.The material of this paper comes from the author’s audio-conference interpreting practice in a concentrating solar power project during her internship.The conference focuses on the issues of the reception,installment,commissioning of the equipment after its arrival and the matters need attention in the construction process.In the conference,the author well completed her interpretation by using her interpreting knowledge and skills.After the conference,the author reviewed and reflected on her interpreting process and summarized the barriers in interpreting,which include: speech production and perception problems arising from the foreign speakers’ strong accent,note-taking difficulty caused by the speakers’ long discourse and comprehension difficulties resulted from the interpreter’s lack of domain knowledge.Meanwhile,there are also deficiencies in her performance,which include: grammatical mistakes,misinterpretations as well as communication problems led by the absence of non-verbal information.This report aims to illustrate how to overcome the above barriers under the guidance of Gile’s Effort Models of consecutive interpretation and his comprehension equation of interpretation,the solutions include: analyzing the speaker’s discourse features,accumulating project knowledge and previewing conference outline in preparation phase and simplifying interpreting notes,using linguistic and extra-linguistic knowledge in interpreting phase.Meanwhile,the interpreter uses some interpreting skills like confirming the speakers’ opinions,summarizing the speakers’ speeches,supplementing information to the source language and omitting the speakers’ redundant information to improve her interpretation quality.At the end,the author summarizes her highlights and deficiencies with reference to three-party evaluations and puts forward some suggestions on quality improvement of audio-conference interpreting,hoping to provide interpreters and researchers with some practical references in this field. |
