A Report On The E-C Translation Of Australian Short Fiction Crushed Red Geraniums

This is a report on English-Chinese translation of the unpublished Australian short story Crushed Red Geraniums by Australian writer Glen Phillips.The novel tells the story of a mother who led three children to travel to Perth in the context of the war years.The translator completed the translation practice with the guidance of Skopos theory,and summarized the difficulties and solutions in translating the novel.This practice report includes four parts: translation task description,translation process description,translation case analysis and translation practice summary.The third part of the case analysis is the core content of the translation practice report.Under the guidance of Skopos theory,the translator discussed the author’s translation process in detail from the vocabulary and sentence levels based on the principle of “skopos”,“fidelity” and “coherence”.This paper probes into the difficulties encountered in the process of translation and the translation methods adopted by the translator,such as proper use of idioms,explicit pronoun,splitting,and so on.The translator hopes that excellent Australian novels can be introduced to Chinese readers through the translation of the Australian novel Crushed Red Geraniums,and Chinese readers can better understand Australian novels and their customs,history and culture,which can promote literary exchanges between the two countries.
