A Report On Consecutive Interpreting For The Second Dongguan English Singing Talent Show Promotion Conference

This report is based on a C-E consecutive interpreting practice of the author for the 2nd Dongguan English Singing Talent Promotion Conference,which was co-hosted by Dongguan Sun Website and Dongguan English Club.The author was appointed to interpret for the meeting due to the attendance of many foreign entrepreneurs from training institutions,musical instruments companies and other industries.The author’s main task was to interpret the speeches of the leaders to potential sponsors,among which the most important part is the interpretation of the sponsorship types.In order to ensure the smooth running of the interpreting work,the author did a lot of preparation work such as contacting the speakers in advance to get the outline of their speeches,getting the specific investment plan,researching the terms through dictionaries online and offline,consulting with colleagues and searching information from the last session.Through analyzing the recording text,the author finds that the main difficulty lies in the existence of a large number of run-on sentences,long sentences,subjectless clauses and figures.In addition,many institutional names and titles also challenges a lot.According to the Interpretive Theory,the essence of interpretation is the transmission of meaning.Its triangular model includes three major procedures: comprehension,deverbalization,and reformulation.Under the guidance of Interpretive Theory,the author has conducted an in-depth analysis of this practice and proposed some specific coping strategies.At the time of comprehension,if the speaker’s meaning is not completely expressed by his words,the interpreter can take the tactic of semantic supplementary.When processing language information,the interpreter can use the method of segmenting sense groups for long sentences to ensure fluency,while use the method of omission for information redundancy to keep simplicity.For outputting,because of the differences of language structure and expressing habits in Chinese and English,the source language must be logically processed and structurally reorganized to conform to the expressing habits of the target language.Hopefully,this report can make contribution to the further study in promotion conference interpreting,and can provide some practical suggestions to interpreters and learners in this field.
