International Chinese language teaching has boomed exponentially, particularly in primary and secondary schools, and the number of students who are learning Chinese has increased significantly. The Spanish-speaking countries(Spain and Latin American countries)have also experienced the so called "Chinese fever".Even though the number of students learning Chinese is increasing, there is a notorious lack of textbooks which are suitable for Spanish-speaking students. Moreover, although Spanish and Latin American countries use Spanish, there are some subtle differences in the Spanish used in these countries. These differences might be related to accent but also to vocabulary. In addition, there are distinctive characteristics in the use of the language which are linked to the different cultural and historical backgrounds among all the Spanish-speaking countriesThe choice of teaching materials is crucial for Chinese teaching. The textbook for teaching Chinese as a foreign language leads the way teachers and students have to follow in the process of Chinese teaching and learning.Although the book "Happy Chinese’ is popular all over the world, there are some problems in the translation of the English version and the Spanish version. These problems may interfere in the process of learning or even cause confusion for students. This thesis is titled Research on the translation problems in Spanish language of"Happy Chinese".The purpose of this study is to identify the translation problems contained in the "Happy Chinese""(Spanish version)textbook and provide more appropriate translation suggestions that may contribute to improve the teaching of Chinese in the Spanish-speaking countries and regions. The theoretical basis of this research is functional translation theory, and the research method is developed according to the theory.First of all,the translated content of the "Happy Chinese" textbook was screened to determine which translations present problems.Secondly, this paper sorts out these translation issues and classifies them in four aspects. Finally, based on statistics and analysis results, this paper also gives suggestions based on the actual situation of overseas Chinese teaching. The first chapter is an introduction which includes a review of existing research results related to the subject, research significance and research methods. The second chapter provides an analysis of the translation problems of "Happy Chinese" from Chinese into Spanish. The reason for the problem in this chapter is that the meanings of the source and target words are not equivalent. This category is divided into the following categories:1.The meaning in Spanish language is expanded;2.The meaning in Spanish language is reduced;3.There is no word in the Spanish language with such meaning, and the translation corresponds to the error;4.Improper match;5.Translation is completely wrong;6.No distinction between synonyms and it leads to confusion. The third chapter provides an analysis of the translation problems of "Happy Chinese".In this case, the reason that causes the problem is that the Spanish translation fails to explain the grammatical function of the word. This chapter is divided into the following categories:1.Only give fuzzy grammatical terms without specific explanation;2.Spanish translation changes the part of the original word;3.Spanish translation expands the grammatical function of the word;4.The translator does not understand the Spanish grammar;5.The translation is out of context and fails to reflect the grammatical function of the word in the sentence. The fourth chapter provides an analysis of the translation problems of "Happy Chinese" caused because the Spanish translation fails to reflect the culture contained in the word.It is divided into two major categories:1.Lack of Spanish words that embody the culture;2.Ignore the cultural meaning of the Spanish words and convey the wrong message. The fifth chapter provides an analysis of the translation problems of "Happy Chinese" caused by inconsistent standards. This chapter is divided into two categories:1.The overall plan is inconsistent;2.The unified standard in Spanish is ambiguous. The sixth chapter includes the author’s suggestions,so they can contribute to improve not only "Happy Chinese",but also to set a precedent for the new textbooks that will be published in the future:1.Be consistent and use standardized translations;2.Use different translations for Latin American Spanish and Spanish from Spain;3.For the primary and secondary school students, translation should include pictures;4.Translators should explain the cultural and language background knowledge;5.If Chinese and foreign translators cooperate, the result of this kind of translation work will be better. This chapter also provides conclusions and a glossary. It is very useful because it lists all the translation problems of "Happy Chinese"(Spanish version)found in this study, and gives more suitable Spanish translations. In order to facilitate the understanding of Chinese teachers, the author also gives an explanation of the Chinese of these alternative translations.
