Struggles in an Ancient City is a large modern national opera created and debuted by the Central Political Department Opera House based on the novel of the same name.Shanghai Music Conservatory made bold adaptation and innovation of it in 2015.The author played as the villain "Gao Ziping" in this version, and this paper closely associates with the author's artistic practical performance experience and experience, trying to dig out the richness, dramatic characteristic of the aria and the complexity, salience of the characters, and taking it to conduct the related research and discussion around the characterization and singing style of “Gao Ziping” in this essay. In order to make this study as thorough as possible, this paper starts with the script, the aria and the lyrics. The introduction, three chapters of main body and the conclusion part consist of the framework of the thesis. The introduction introduces the necessary information related to the thesis. The first chapter mainly elaborates and compares the difference of the script among the novel of the same name, the original version of this opera, and the version adapted by Shanghai Music Conservatory. The second and third chapters discuss the core content. The second chapter mainly focuses on the four arias of this character and tries to vividly depict the stage image and character of this character through the specific analysis and elaboration of the voice, lines, body and performance. The third chapter discusses specific problems in the process of the character shaping in the practical stage in detail, mainly discussing that the performer should form a sense of performance, namely the character shaping of the villain can't blindly stay the primary performance state of defacing the character, but should try to dig the inner complexity and diversity of characters, and present it vividly on the stage. The conclusion part is the concluding paragraph of the whole paper, including: on the one hand,we should realize that in order to successfully create the negative role,we must break through the psychological barriers and some limitations of the performers, and approach and integrate into the role with the subjective desire. On the other hand,on the basis of paying attention to classroom learning, vocal music learners should take the initiative to strengthen the training of stage practice in order to improve the singer's professional skills in an all-round way.The shaping of villains in opera is very important. It plays a vital role in creating conflicts between characters, promoting the development of plots and creating drama climax etc..However,the shaping of villains is difficult and challenging.Performers should pay more attention to it,and should dig deeper and try to practice it on the stages of art activities.Struggles in an Ancient City adapted by Shanghai Music Conservatory is an important show which is staged to celebrate the 70 th anniversary of the end of WWII and China's overlapping war against invading Japanese. In this sense, the research of this thesis has high conception and practical application value.
