This translation report is drawn from chapters 8 of Paul Warde''s The Invention of Sustainability: Nature and Destiny C.1500-1870,which mainly describes the relationship between history, religion, climate and the sustainable development. The source language is objective and concise, and some vocabulary involves historical and religious levels.China is at a critical stage in building a well-off society, and the situation of environmental protection is becoming increasingly severe. The concept of sustainable development runs through the book, which provides reference and lessons for how to deal with rapid economic development and ecological protection.Under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence theory, the translator analyzes this translation project at the lexical, syntactic and cultural levels and discusses the translation of the difficult words, the complex sentences, and the profound cultural background. The accurate and smooth translation is achieved by consulting the relevant materials, figuring out the background knowledge and applying the proper translation techniques. This report includes five chapters: Chapter One is the introduction of the translation project including project background, project meaning, and project structure.Chapter Two is the source text background, including the information of the authors, key points of the source text, and the language features of the source text.Chapter Three is the translation theory, and the author introduces Nida's functional equivalence theory which is used in this report. In the fourth chapter, difficulties in translation are analyzed under the guidance of functional equivalence theory.Chapter Five is the conclusion of this report, mainly including enlightenments and problems learned from this translation project.
