English is widely used throughout the world as a communication tool,and many Chinese students start learning English from primary school.Vocabulary lays the foundation of English learning.Without vocabulary,language may lose its actual meaning.However,in many rural junior high schools in China,students' vocabulary learning is not effective,which has a bad influence on developing their overall language ability.The teaching suggestions of the National English Curriculum for Compulsory Education(2017)put forward that “the process of language learning should be focused,and attention should be paid on the application and practice of language”,which conforms to the characteristics of task-based language teaching.TBLT(the abbreviation of task-based language teaching)is suggested to be applied to vocabulary teaching practice.The activities of performing tasks in meaningful situation will involve learners more intensively in understanding and using the target vocabulary.This thesis aims to investigate the current situation of English vocabulary teaching and learning,to explore the application of TBLT in vocabulary teaching and to discover the effects of TBLT on English vocabulary teaching and learning in rural junior high schools.The author randomly selected two parallel classes of Linqiong Middle School in Qionglai as the experimental subjects.TBLT was applied to vocabulary teaching in the experimental class,while traditional vocabulary teaching method was carried out in the controlled class.The experiment lasted for two months.Data collected through experimental method,questionnaire,and interview was analyzed with the help of SPSS.A conclusion could be drawn from the results in the experiment that the current situation of vocabulary teaching and learning is not good.Many problems emerges in vocabulary teaching and learning,such as: students could not apply the target vocabulary to language use appropriately;they forget about the target vocabulary easily;lacking interest and confidence,students gradually lose heart in vocabulary learning.The author adopts Willis' framework in vocabulary teaching and designs meaningful tasks in vocabulary use to help students use the target vocabulary in authentic situation.The data presents that TBLT could promote students' comprehension of the target vocabulary and cultivate their ability in vocabulary use.In addition,TBLT could arouse students' interest in vocabulary learning,and from which students could gradually develop their own vocabulary learning methods and strategies.The application of TBLT in vocabulary teaching has also been highly valued by teachers.On the other hand,there are still some problems in the application of TBLT in vocabulary teaching,such as: the research subjects are not big enough,the experiment is not long enough,and so on.
