A Report On Translation Of Research And Development FY 2015

This practice report is accomplished on the basis of English-Chinese translation of the AAAS Report XXXIX:Research and Development FY 2015(hereinafter referred to as the R&D Report),issued by American Association for the Advancement of Science(hereinafter referred to as AAAS)on its official website(http://www.aaas.org).The research and development(hereinafter referred to as R&D)budget is the start point and an overall reflection of the science and technology activities,representing the innovation capacity of a country.As the dominator of science and technology,the United States succeeds in drawing other nations' attention for its efficient R&D budgets and systems.AAAS is authorized to make analysis on R&D budget and publishes its findings to the public for reference.Due to its third-party sci-tech consultant,AAAS's analysis is more specialized,objective and impartial,making its R&D Report the focus of the politicians,scholars,investors home and abroad.Hence,translation of the R&D Report provides a reference for the improvement and optimization of China's R&D budget systems,which embodies a practical significance.In this practice report,the author first described this translation task with its background information,content and major linguistic features in chapter ?.Then,translating process was depicted,including translation schedule,pre-task preparation,post-task modification and quality control.The chapter ? was designed to be an introduction to Nida's Functional Equivalence and its six principles,as well as guidance of Nida's theory to the translation task.Chapter IV focused on case studies,which is the key part of the practice report.Guided by the six principles proposed in Nida's theory of Functional Equivalence,the author chose suitable translation strategies to solve the issues during translating,for example,consistence of proper names'translation,translation norms of terms in finance and science,syntactic and logical arrangements on translation of long and complicated sentences,textual cohesion and coherence.Strategies the author adopted included information searching,synchronizing,cutting,reconstructing,integrating,addition,etc.Hence,functional equivalence was achieved at lexical,syntactic and textual level to ensure that receptors gained much similar reading experience as the original readers.In the end,a summary was made to conclude what the author has learned from this translation task and discuss what needs to be further improved.As the practice report reveals,the author should make full preparation before the translation.It requires the author to integrate printed and internet materials to understand relevant specialized knowledge when translating interdisciplinary text.Additionally,as the task is an informative text,the author is supposed to have translation competence to convey message of the R&D Report fully and thoroughly.Hence,it's imperative that the author be flexible with translation strategies and try best to improve the translated text,which is equivalent with the original one on meaning and function as well.
