A Study Of Lcang Skya Rol Pa'i Rdo Rie's Translation Achievements

lcang skya rol pa'i rdo rje was an outstanding Buddhist master and translator who was proficient in Tibetan,Sanskrit,Chinese,Manchu and Mongolian languages in the eighteenth century.During the Qing Dynasty,with the support and care of Emperor Qianlong,he engaged in the translation of Tibetan-Mongolian and Tibetan-Manchu languages for more than 60 years.In terms of translation practice,he translated bstan 'gyur from Tibetan into Mongolian,and translated the bka 'gyur into Manchu with reference to the Chinese and Mongolian versions.In addition,the Chinese version of the Sutra of the First Length and Righteousness was translated into Manchu,Mongolian and Tibetan.In terms of translation theory,he wrote the book Orthography-the Source of the Wise.In this book,he clearly put forward the criteria and methods of translation,the quality of the translator and so on.His translation theory not only inherits the translation criteria and methods proposed in Volume Two of the Declaration,but also puts forward new translation methods and viewpoints in poetry,rhetoric,logic and other fields.More importantly,for the first time in Tibetan translation history,he explicitly raised the issue of translator's quality.Therefore,lcang skya rol pa'i rdo rje's contribution to translation has an important historical position in the history of Tibetan,Han,Mongolian and Manchu nationalities.His translation theory not only played a decisive role in guiding the work of Sino-Tibetan translation,Tibetan-Manchurian translation and Tibetan-Mongolian translation at that time,but also played an important role in guiding the work of Sino-Tibetan translation today.This thesis divides lcang skya rol pa'i rdo rje's achievements in translation practice and translation theory into four chapters for comment and research.Each chapter is summarized as follows:Chapter ? briefly introduces lcang skya rol pa'i rdo rje's life,and analyses the external and internal reasons for his translation work at that time.In chapter ?,the author uses the methods of historical philology and comparative studies to make a deep study of lcang skya rol pa'i rdo rje's translation practice.He not only translated the Tibetan version of bstan 'gyur into Mongolian,but also wrote the orthographic character,the source of sages,before translating bstan'gyur into Mongolian.He also translated the bka 'gyur into Manchu by referring to the Mongolian and Chinese versions of the bka 'gyur In order to translate the bka'gyur into Manchu,he also compiled five kinds of dictionaries,such as the Names of the Epithet of One Thousand Buddha and Imperial Five-Body Qing Wenjian,which were written in contrast to each other.On the basis of the previous works,he established the Qing Scripture hall.He also translated the Sutra of the First Length and Righteousness from the Chinese version of the bka 'gyur into Tibetan,Mongolian and Manchu.Chapter ? studies lcang skya rol pa'i rdo rje's achievements in translation theory with comparative research methods.This paper not only makes a detailed study of the translation criteria and methods proposed by Zhang Jia Ruobidogi,as well as the quality of the translator,but also makes a comparative study of his translation theory and translation theory at home and abroad,pointing out the similarities and differences.Finally,the characteristics of his translation theory and its role in translation practice at that time arc discussed,as well as its guiding significance to contemporary Chinese-Tibetan translation.In Chapter ?,using the methods of history and historical philology,the author comments on the historical position of Icang skya rol pa'i rdo rje's translation achievements in the cultural exchanges and dissemination between Tibet,Mongolia,Manchu and Chinese in the eighteenth century,the historical role played by improving Tibetan translation theory,and the historical contributions made to the reunification of the motherland and national unity in the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty.
