NCEA is New Zealand's national academic evaluation system for Chinese language subject for high school students.It's currently the official Chinese proficiency text in New Zealand with the highest popularity and the largest number of participants,which has played an active role in the international promotion of Chinese.New HSK is the most popular standardized Chinese proficiency text in China.Based on both tests are standardized tests for learners of Chinese as a second language,Therefore,this thesis takes the vocabularies of NCEA Chinese and New HSK as research objects,making a comparative study from four aspects,including the way of compiling,vocabulary size,vocabulary grading and communicative function,so as to summarize the similarities and differences between the two sets of vocabulary.Then it further discusses the different concepts of vocabulary teaching indicated in the two kinds of outlines of vocabulary.Finally,this thesis put forward some suggestions to improve the outline of NCEA vocabulary.Meanwhile,some ideas provided on vocabulary teaching in the hope of contributing to the further development of NCEA Chinese.Through the comparison of the two outlines of vocabulary,this thesis comes to the conclusion:NCEA vocabulary of level 1 to 3 is a little higher than the primary level,which roughly meets the requirements of level 3 and a half of New HSK,but cannot reach the level 4 and above.Besides,the two kinds of outlines of vocabulary indicate different concepts of vocabulary teaching.Briefly speaking,New HSK takes the f-requency of vocabulary as the main index of word selection,but NCEA is character by word,or even character by sentence,resulting in the number of new words(words beyond the outline)appears more,which to some extent ignores the vocabulary grading.In addition,due to the differences in compiling ways and design concepts,there are also lead to differences in vocabulary standards and teaching methods.Then through the discussion of the theory of the character-based standard and word-based standard draw a conclusion that although NCEA is not prominent enough in the aspect of character-to-word ratio,it makes up for the disadvantage of the neglect of communicative function in the character-based teaching method to some extent.And it is also its most distinctive feature.
