Positive Discourse Analysis On The Shanghai Cooperation Qingdao Summit News Reports From The Perspective Of The Appraisal Theory

Critical discourse analysis examines the ideological meaning behind the linguistic structure by analyzing the linguistic features of the discourse and the generated social historical background,so as to reveal the implicit ideology and unequal power relations in the discourse.In the past,the study of critical discourse analysis focused too much on politics,paid attention to criticism and influenced society with a negative attitude.Regarding this,Professor Martin put forward a new proposition of "positive discourse analysis".He believes that linguistic analysis should observe "good news" that advocates peace and equality with more positive attitude and vision,and makes critical thinking toward a more determined direction,to guide readers with positive thoughts.The main theoretical basis of positive discourse analysis is appraisal theory.The appraisal theory is an extension and extension of the systemic functional grammar in the study of interpersonal meaning.The appraisal theory framework consists of three subsystems:attitude,engagement,and graduation.This thesis will conduct a positive discourse analysis of the target discourse under the framework of appraisal theory,and explore the feasibility of the theory in positive discourse analysis.From the perspective of positive discourse analysis,under the framework of appraisal theory,by using Antconc as a marker analysis tool,and by combing quantitative statistics with text analysis,this thesis makes an analysis of 40 news reports on the "Shanghai Cooperation Organization Qingdao Summit" in China Daily.This thesis focuses on the following three questions:1.How is the positive discourse used in the news report of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Qingdao Summit in terms of attitude system?2.How is the positive discourse used in the news report of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Qingdao Summit in terms of engagement system?3.How is the positive discourse used in the news report of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Qingdao Summit in terms of graduation system?The research results show that the appraisal resources are widely distributed in the news reports of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Qingdao Summit,but these resources are not evenly distributed,affect and appreciation resources account for the most majority in the aspect of attitude resources.The attitude resources distributed in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Qingdao Summit are almost positive.In the engagement resources,the majority are the entertain resources in the discourse expansion and the proclaim resources in the discourse contraction.In gradation resources,the author prefers to use the force resources.From the perspective of positive analysis,the use of attitude resources increases readers’ great expectations and determination for China’s development.The use of engagement resources not only expands the dialogue space,but also achieves mutual progress.The use of graduation resources not only strengthens the emotional resonance,but also emphasizes the achievements of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Qingdao Summit and China.The results of this thesis’ s research will be useful for positive discourse analysis in the future.At the same time,it will be helpful to news reporters and foreign language learners.
