The Study On Discourse Marker "Ni V Zhe"

Frequently used in modern spoken Chinese,discourse markers have significant influence on oral communication.In this thesis,"Ni V Zhe" that is a common discourse marker in modern Chinese is considered.A comprehensive investigation on this discourse marker is conducted based on description and explanation from multiple perspectives.In addition,synchronic and diachronic methods are jointly used to probe its evolutionary process and formation mechanism,thereby making systematic analysis of "Ni V Zhe".This study consists of five major sections:In the Chapter One,also the introduction to this thesis,the purpose and significance of this study,as well as the research object are introduced.A literature review on "Ni V Zhe" is also made,followed by the innovativeness of this topic and the description of research methods,the source corpora,etc.The definition and the usage patterns of "Ni V Zhe" are presented in Chapter Two.To begin with,"Ni V Zhe" is divided into the discourse marker and non-discourse marker,based on which the basic characteristics of "Ni V Zhe" as a discourse marker are investigated.In addition,the features of different types of "Ni V Zhe" are identified by analyzing its usage patterns.In Chapter Three,the pragmatic functions of "Ni V Zhe" is analyzed.The position of "Ni V Zhe" in the text,its function in acting upon the turn and its role in textual cohesion are probed from the perspective of textual function.On the other hand,the influence of "Ni V Zhe" on communication is analyzed from the perspective of interpersonal function.In Chapter Four,the evolution of "Ni V Zhe" and the cause and mechanism of it becoming a discourse marker are investigated.The evolutionary process of "Ni V Zhe" becoming a discourse marker is teased out by collecting and analyzing the diachronic corpora,based on which the causes influencing the formation of�Ni V Zhe" as a discourse marker and its grammaticalization mechanism are explored.Chapter Five is a general conclusion of this study.In this chapter,a brief summary of the research content and findings is given.Moreover,the innovation and the deficiencies of this thesis are also pointed out.
