Liu Tanhua was an outstanding Chinese folk instrumental music composer and educator in 1930 s as well as the leading and representative figure of Chinese folk music.Chanting in illness is the first Erhu composition created by Liu Tianhua.The initial draft was completed in the poor and ailing situation in 1915 and the final in1918,in which He vividly depicted the intellectuals' wrathful feelings of depression and patriotic indignation during the period of May Forth Movement as well as their spirit of exploration and struggle for social progress in a lyrical way.With creating ten compositions,Liu Tianhua not only brouht the significant breakthrought but also accelerated the development and innovation of other folk muscial instruments.The birth of the of Chanting in illness was of extraordinary significance to the development of Chinese national instrumental music.Since the birth of Chanting in illness,it has been widely spreading and been favorited by a large number of Rrhu players.As a traditional music,its popularity is lasting until today.This paper made the in-depth analysis of the style,characteristics of times and historical features of work through analysing and comparing the perfoemance versions of Liu Tianhua,Min Huifeng and Song Fei,which made the palyer have a deeper understanding for this composition's such aspects as the connotation of music and muscial representability so as to achieve the more excellent “re-creation” in performance to intepret the connotation of the composition as well as to accelerate the developmemt of Erhu art.
