The Origin Research Of Female Devils In Journey To The West

This thesis begins with the history of the matriarchal mythology.The research results which derive from Archaeology,Art and Mythology have been used to prove how the patriarchal society changes the image of the Great Mother,differentiating and suppressing goddesses.And then,Feminism and Prototype Theory have been used to analyze the image of female devils,explaining their characters,originations and patriarchy thought appeared in Journey to the West.Except Introduction and Conclusion,this thesis includes three chapters.In the first chapter,the history of the matriarchal mythology has been told by two sections,The Origin of Great Mother and The Decline of Great Mother.In the second chapter,the relevance between goddesses and female devil in Journey to the West has been divided to two sections.In the first section,goddesses in the prehistory had been suppressed by Patriarchy culture in three methods mainly.Male create male gods,letting them marry goddesses,demonizing goddesses and erasing them.The second section talks about the original type of fox devil,rabbit devil and Rakshasa in Journey to the West.In the third chapter,the description and explanation of female devils in Journey to the West has been divided into four sections.The first section is female devils’ crimes,included destroying the relationship between male and the stability of patriarchy society,damaging male’ S moral confidence and religion insistence.The second section is the attitude of Tang Seng and his apprentice toward female devils,including Sun Wukong,Tang Seng and Zhu Bajie’ S attitude.The third section is female devils’ ending.Comparing to male devils,female devils died more,except some devils that have various relationships with God,Buddhisl and Tang Seng and his apprentices.Miserable loss is a common feature of these female devils.The fourth section explains the differences and the similarities between female devils,women and goddesses.Firstly,women and female devils’ ending is different.Women have better endings than female devils because they are protected by Buddhism as human.However,the women and female devils have been distorted.They indulge in sexual desire according to male’ S hope.Secondly,the difference between female devils and goddesses has been explained.They are in opposite positions in the world of Confucian thoughts.Female devils play the role of Minx.Goddesses play the role of tutors,who test Tang Seng and his apprentices by changing into beautiful women.
