C-E Translation Report On Excerpts Of Kong Shan From The Perspective Of Narrative Stylistics

Kong Shan is one of the representative works of Alai,a famous contemporary Tibetan writer.This trilogy depicts six stories from the late 1950s to the early1990s in a Tibetan village called Ji village.The first volume of Kong Shan has been published by China Translation Corporation,and the other two volumes have no English translation at present.This practice report is based on the translator’s own translation of Qing Lei(《轻雷》),the third volume of Kong Shan.Qing Lei is a story about a Tibetan youth Lajiazeli,who gives up his study and love,and embarks on the journey of cutting down trees and selling timbers.Owing to the unique narrative and stylistic expressions,Kong Shan is regarded as the pinnacle of Alai’s artistic thinking,along with his other masterpiece Chen Ai Luo Ding(《尘埃落定》).Narrative stylistics is selected as the guiding theory in this report to study the translation practice with tools of narratology and stylistics.By dissecting the artistic features of Qing Lei and exploring Alai’s linguistic style,the translator adopts division of point of view summarized by Genette and Shen Dan,modes of speech presentation classified by Leech and Short,and analyzes typical cases in Chinese original texts and English target texts on the narrative and speech level respectively in order to identify the similarities and differences between the two.Meanwhile,this report attempts to offer explanations for these narrative and stylistic features.This report incorporates the translator’s own experience,and summarizes the corresponding translation methods.
