| Atonement,published in 2001,is one of Ian Mc Ewan’s most popular novels.Since its publication,the work has aroused widespread attention in the academic circle,and scholars have analyzed it from different perspectives.Although the novel was translated into Chinese in 2008,previous research on Atonement in the field of translation studies is relatively scarce.In view of this,the present study attempts to research on the translation of Atonement from the perspective of narrative stylistics.Narrative stylistics refers to stylistic research based on the narratological framework.This thesis of translation research draws on the theoretical framework put forward by Xu Youzhi et al.in the book Narratological Stylistics and Interpretation of Literary Narratives.The analysis is mainly conducted from two perspectives,namely:narrative time and narrative point of view.Through comparative analysis of the original work and the translation,it can be concluded that Guo Guoliang’s translation is generally faithful to the original work.Moreover,the translation makes use of idiomatic Chinese expressions,and the use of four-character words has facilitated the acceptance and understanding of Chinese readers.The major translation method Guo Guoliang adopts in his translation is literal translation.Amplification,omission and inversion are the three main translation techniques employed.On the whole,the smooth and coherent translation has faithfully represented the content of Atonement.As it should be,the translation is not perfect,and parts of the translation lack appropriateness,which tends to weaken the emotional and aesthetic effect of the original text.The writer attempts to analyze specific translation examples and put forward own views.In addition to discussions on specific treatment in the translation,this thesis also strives to conduct an in-depth exploration of the applicability of narrative stylistics in translation studies,which hopefully proves to be of some theoretical value. |
