| There are different subjects in the translation activity, including the writer, the translator and the reader, who are not independent but interactive with each other. The intersubjectivity of translation has broken the primary and secondary relationship in the traditional translation theories and turned into an equal and complementary relationship. The English translation of syllabus, whose demand has remarkably increased in recent years,is regarded as an important component of the international communication of the Chinese universities. In the process, the English translation of syllabus closely contacts with the subjects of the writer(the instructor),the translator and the reader(the student)from each other. The translation of this text type embodies the typical feature of intersubjectivity. In other words,it is the key to the success of translation whether the translation can achieve the effective communication among different subjects. This report is a translation report on six course syllabi for the undergraduates in Southwestern University of Finance and Economics(SWUFE),including Mathematical Analysis I,Selected Readings of Chinese and English Literary Classics,Introduction to Basic Principles of Marxism,Advanced Mathematics(Volume 2),Single Viable Calculus and Statistics. The translation task was entrusted by the instructors of above-mentioned six courses and in the process there are three main translation difficulties, including the English translation of noun terms, book titles and Chinese zero-subject sentences.Against the general background of the international communication of the Chinese universities and with the guidance of the theory of intersubjectivity, the present author applies the research methodology of observation and descriptive analysis to analyze the three translation difficulties above in detail and adopts corresponding translation strategies. In the translation process, the present author aims to build up an equal conversation among the three subjects to achieve the effective transformation of the syllabus content. In practice, the present author has put forward the principle of linguistic context for noun term translation, the “established” principle for book title translation and the strategies of subject supplement, supplement of the dummy subject “it” and application of “imperative sentence” for the translation of Chinese zero-subject sentences. The research subject of this report is only the English translation of six course syllabi of SWUFE for the undergraduates,so the number of syllabi is limited, which are not representative enough in the English translation of syllabus of the Chinese universities. However, the translation plans and strategies the present author applies in this report,to some extent, may provide some ideas in this research field. |
