The United States of America is a multiracial country.Among many races,Chinese American is a noticeable group. In the early years of immigration,Chinese Americans mainly earned a living on manual work, such as gold-mining or railway-building;later,Chinese Americans started their own business in the fields of laundry, catering services or retailing.Numerous studies were focused on Chinese Americans' social status and their living conditions. After the analysis of Chinese Americans' images in the postwar literature,we can have a further understanding of their life at that time. Therefore,in this translation project,Chapter 2 “The Chinese American Adam: History and Universality in John Steinbeck's Eden” of the book Invisible Subjects--Asian America in Postwar Literature written by Heidi Kim in2016 is translated from English to Chinese in an effort to make contributions to the study of Chinese Americans and its related researches.Starting with a postwar literary works, the second chapter analyzes Lee's personal image, his language features, his social status, relationships among Lee and other major characters as well as the background which reflects the identity shift of Chinese Americans from the perspective of an Asian American. This paper is composed of two parts. The first part consists of the source text and the target text. The second part is the main body of this paper, which includes the introduction,Newmark's translation theory, case analysis and the conclusion.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark's translation theory, the present translator analyzes the type of the source text and uses different methods to make the translation faithful and fluent. At the lexical level, the translator refers to the translation of parallel texts and adopts literal translation, transliteration and so forth to translate. At the syntactic level, the translator mainly employs the communicative translation and semantic translation after the analysis of sentences. At the textual level, the translator pays attention to the coherence.Translation is a comprehensive process. As an expressive text, translator ought to use semantic translation as preference and combine communicative translation,so as to not only convey the original message faithfully and clearly, but also make the target text readable for Chinese readers.
