This paper studies the application of light in figurative oil painting in the order of the development of Western painting.First,by emphasizing the application and development of light in visual arts,we emphasize the importance of the study of light application,so as to draw the key content of this article,namely,to explore the development and application of light in the concrete oil painting.Each period with the development and reform of contemporary science and technology,the mutual influence between the various disciplines,such as materials science,anatomy and perspective,optical principle,photography technology and digital media technology and development,the impact of aesthetic results will express their aesthetic understanding of the use of material and technical means of the media the artist,this is not only the concept of change,but also indirectly promoted the material media and technology innovation.This paper studies the use light of different artists in the same period through the horizontal contrast,and also studies the changes and development of light use in different periods in the longitudinal contrast.Light leads to the emergence of light and shadow.Optical principles make the understanding of optics gradually from the description of the imagery to the study of the essence.Because of changes in the concept of light and given new content,which had an impact on the artistic effect,so we can notice from the earliest paintings appeared in natural light to the light directly depicting artificial light,centuries of artists to use the concept of light but the purposes are not the same,I hope contemporary artists can be very excellent to use light to achieve a better artistic effect,and also hope to inspire new thinking on the use of light.
