Rembrandt is a great artist of Holland in 17th century, who is a peak in western art history. He devoted his life to the study of light and shadow and the relationship between light and dark in the image, he has taken the light and shadow to extremes so far more than other contemporary painters, while he has influenced many later artists. His light and shadow glamorous work is the essence of life, whose self-portrait is more like the world of art treasures, and deep, broad, touching, to achieve the perfect unity of skills and mood. Artistic conception is an important concept in Chinese traditional aesthetics and lifelong pursuit of many painters. Although there is no formulation of artistic conception in western art category, excellent works of literature and art are similar, have infected people through the power of artistic language. This is the premise of this article discussion about light and shadow and artistic conception in the portrait painting.Zhang Li is a member of the Chinese realistic painting, who inherited and learned Rembrandt’s major painting feature, and successfully created a group of oriental self-portraits. His technique of calligraphy is full of charming, his works in terms of light and shadow is beautiful and a unique poetic beauty. He inspired my creation, and I expect that this technique can be better combined with my theme.This paper focuses on the research of Rembrandt lighting techniques and the resulting aesthetic artistic conception, also includes understanding of these knowledge and practical application about lighting in my graduation creation, lighting、light and shade、texture、brush strokes、color、form is complete and unitary, they influence each other, wonderful together, and co-produce the power of art to infect humans.
