In the 1930s,American society had been living in the shadow of the Great Depression.During this period,American women had been hit by the Great Depression in every area of their lives, such as family life, education, employment and so on.Faced with crisis, they took on more responsibilities than before.More and More women entered the workforce in the 1930s.Woman and Man shared their responsibility for supporting their family in respond to crisis. But at that time their employment situation deteriorated seriously. In the 1930s,the female employment in American faced many problems, such as the sex segregation in employment, the larger income margin between men and women and the unprecedented sex discrimination during the process of employment.Unexpectedly,Women continued to increase their participation in paid wage labor outside the home.To be sure, women concentrated in the low-paying,lowest-status jobs. But in the face of the greatest economic crisis this country had never seen and strongly hostile public opinion, women increased their participation in the work force. It wasn’t easy. Not only that, this decade saw a dramatic increase in the number of married women who entered the work force. In general,Women seem to had been less affected by unemployment than men.In the 1930s,women expanded their role in the family successfully.Although gender discrimination against female workers was still in existence, women might even have taken a small step forward.
