The Study Of The Influence Of Different Presentation Modes On The Recognition Of Emotional Faces

The recognition of the facial identity is affected by the facial expression.Some scholars believe that the individual is based on the emotional significance of facial expressions to complete recognition task,but some scholars believe that the individual is based on the details of the facial identity to complete recognition task.Since comparing with the mixed presentation,the separate presentation is more able to reduce the individual’s sensitivity to stimuli,there were two modes of presentationthe separate presentation and the mixed presentation-in the learning phase of this study to present faces to explore the recognition characteristics of emotional face under different presentation conditions.In Experiment 1,there were 22 participants(half males and half females)by a 2(presentation: separate presentation vs mixed presentation)?2(facial expressions: happy vs angry)two factor mixed design.Each experiment consisted of 4 blocks,and each of which was divided into two stages of learning and testing.The facial expression was same in learning phase and testing phase.The participants in each block need to learn 20 faces(half males and half females).Under separate condition,faces in 2 blocks learning were all of happy expression,and in the other 2 blocks were all of anger expression.The sequence of expression appears were balanced between the subjects.Under mixed conditions,faces in learning stage of each block included two kinds of expressions consisted of equal happy and angry.Faces in the learning phase and the other 20 faces(The gender and facial expression ratio of the interfering faces were consistent with the learning phase)were shown mixing in the test phase.Participants were asked to determine whether the face had been seen in the learning phase in 3000 ms after the face presented.There were 22 participants(10 females)in Experiment 2 and the process and design of Experiment 2 were similar to Experiment 1.The facial expressions in the learning and testing phases were different,but the identities were same.The behavior results in Experiment 1 showed that the main effect of facial expression was significant.The discrimination index of the participants on the angry expression faces was significantly higher than that of the happy faces.And EEG results also found that,under the separate condition,the frontal region has a significant old/new effects.And this phenomenon didn’t occur under mixed conditions.The behavior results in Experiment 2 showed that the interaction effect of facial source and presentation mode was significant.The original angry faces were more affected by the present conditions.And ERP results showed that,under the separate condition,there were more significant old/new effects in the original angry faces than the original happy faces in occipital region.The experimental results showed that if there was no changes in facial expression,the angry face recognition had more advantages;but if the expression of faces had changed,the advantage disappeared.The recognition of angry faces were more depended on their emotional meaning and the recognition of happy faces processed more details.It’s more difficult to complete recognition task under the separate condition than the mixed condition as there were more details need to be processed.
