A Study On The English Translation Of Animal And Plant Names In Shi Jing From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

Shi Jing,with a large number of animal and plant images,is not only an ancient ecological encyclopedia but also a standard ecological writing.Translations of Shi Jing won undivided admiration in the foreign-Chinese translation history especially English versions.A look at these different translation versions shows that they have common problems:they just seek macroscopic identify but lack of scrutiny of details.It not only greatly reduces the sense of imagery in the original text,but also breaks the eco-balance between source text and target text.What's more,the purpose of translating classics to introduce the profound and exquisite Chinese culture to foreign readers would not actually be achieved.Therefore,the study of the English translation of the names of animal and plant in Shi Jing cannot be underestimated.By well analyzing the animal and plant names in the 7 widely spread English translations of Shi Jing,the representative translation problems are as follows: 1)Overgeneralization 2)Inconformity 3)Mistranslation.The paper is to prove the “history”and “poems” with the traditional datum on Exegetic and Nominology under the care of eco-translatologic theories,to scientifically define the truths of the animals and plants recorded in Shi Jing,and to dialectically explore the word selections in the translations.Strive to maintain the ecological balance of the environments of the source language and the target language,and strive to clearly indicate the characteristics of connecting the objects intoned in Shi Jing and the specific material objects.The study adopts Text Analysis Method and Classification Research Method.Based on TEB,TTT and TAS,the paper makes further analysis of the typical examples.Meanwhile,various concrete measures of the three translation problems are enumerated: 1)Add some brief explanatory notes on the basis of scientific description of animals and plants for the lacking elements in the target eco-environment.2)Select the most precise word in accordance with the ecological background of the source text.3)Strengthen the study on the names and exegesis for promoting the integration of translation.The purpose of this study is to seek the best translation of plant and animal images in the Shi Jing for balancing the ecological environment of text.Above all,the most important conclusion is the answer to the research problem:A first-rate rendition must be one created by such a translator with a certain cognitive basis who chooses the right translation strategy to make source text harmoniously reproduce in the soil of another language after weighing ecological balances in manyaspects.The thesis is divided into five parts.The first part is a general introduction of the paper,including the study background,study objective and problems,the study methods,the study significance,innovation and framework of the thesis.Among them,the “problems”mentioned is the core problems running through the whole paper and summarized by the author upon analyzing the English translations of the animals and plants in the 7 widely spread translations of Shi Jing(Refer to the attachment).The second part is the literature review.This chapter demonstrates domestic and foreign studies to expound the progress,achievements and shortcomings of related studies and takes domestic research as the focus.The Eco-Translatology is then presented and analyzed in the third part.The fourth part is the main body of the thesis.It begins with a general overview of the names of animal and plant in Shi Jing.Based on eco-translatologic theories,three prominent problems are explored and analyzed successively to propose practical solutions.The fifth part is a summary of the study.
