| In the current context of economic globalization, the school-level exchanges between Chinese universities and international universities are remarkably growing with the pace of constructing world-class universities and first-class disciplines in China,so it is increasingly prominent to translate library resources texts of Chinese universities into English. To translate the texts can not only help international students and foreign teachers solve their relevant problems in study, but also,to some extent, accelerate the internationalization of some Chinese universities and even the entire Chinese higher education. Therefore, the translator was entrusted by the Library of Hebei University of Technology to translate Library Handbook of Hebei University of Technology, and on this basis, the practice report is compiled.Library Handbook of Hebei University of Technology firstly introduces the basic information of Hebei University of Technology library and then illustrates regulations for reader’s reading, borrowing and using books as well as other resources. The source text is written in Chinese, with a tendency of using concise, rigorous and normative words, and complex and variable sentences structures.Generally,it is normative and comprehensible as a typical text of resource texts.Since the source text is a normative document for English readers, the translation is required to be standardized, concise, fluent and expressive,so as to comply with English language habits. To meet these requirements, there are definitely various translation shifts between the source text and the target text in practice.Translation shifts refer to formal departures from the source text in the process of finding corresponding textual materials in the target language, which include two types of translation shifts: one is level shifts and the other is category shifts.Catford’s translation shifts theory is so practical and well organized that it is extremely suitable to guide the transaction transformation of this source text. Therefore, from a perspective of translation shifts theory, the translator analyzes how to realize the translation shifts of original words and sentences in the target text,so as to achieve a maximized equivalence between the source text and the target text. This practice report is divided into four chapters. The first chapter gives a description of the translation tasks, including a brief introduction of the background, features of the source text and the client’s requirements. The second chapter generally illustrates the translator’s preparation for the practice, the translating process and the post-translation proofreading.Thethird chapter is the core of the practice report. In this part, with the guidance of Catford’s translation shifts theory, the translator analyzes the translation cases in detail from two aspects: level shifts and category shifts. The fourth chapter gives a natural conclusion of this translation practice, mainly involving the findings and evaluation as well as the limitations of this practice and the prospect for relevant future research.Through the compilation of this practice report, the translator has had a more comprehensive and profound understanding of the translation of universities’ library resource texts as well as Catford’s translation shifts theory, and then obtained an improvement in translation ability and theoretical attainment.Although there are some limitations and shortcomings in this translation practice report, the translator hope it can provide some enlightenment and reference for researchers in this field to promote the continuous deepening and extension of related fields to a certain degree. |
