| Words and sentences are just the basic units to construct a text, while coherence is an essential feature of a text.At present, most of the essays and monographs on English-Chinese contrast are mainly focused on the comparative study of cohesive devices but scarcely on textual coherence.Traditional translation studies approach the issue of coherence more from the lexical and sentential level than the textual level, and as a result, they emphasize the micro-aspects of a single text rather than the macro cultural pragmatics.Translation researchers usually use the concept of textual coherence to describe the layout of the surface structure of the source or target text but pay little attention to the dynamic function it plays in the process of source-target text transfer.Based on the translation of Embracing the Other: Philosophical,Psychological, and Historical Perspectives on Altruism, this thesis analyses the cases of coherent and incoherent translation text and proposes three relevant strategies to improve textual coherence in the process of E-C translation. It aims at emphasizing the importance of coherence in the organization and generation of meaning, and arousing the coherence awareness of a translator so that he/she may consciously apply more effective translation strategies to improve the quality of translation. |
