| With the development of the world economy,a growing number of people spend their leisure time on inbound or outbound tourism.According to the statistics from the World Tourism Organization,China will become the world’s largest tourist destination country and the fourth largest tourists-generating country by 2020.However,the prosperity of the tourist industry in China is greatly hindered by the poor-quality translations available to foreign travelers. As a new form of tourism, ecotourism attracts more and more visitors at home and abroad.Different from standard commercial mass tourism,it aims at mitigating the constantly-worsened ecological environment. In the information age, many tourists get easy access to ecotourism information on the Internet, the translation of ecotourism texts is of great importance consequently. In this report, the author selects Ecotourism’s Promise and Peril: A Biological Evaluation as the source text of the translation project, and summarizes translation strategies in E-C translation of ecotourism texts within the framework of Skopos Theory from lexical, phrasal and syntactic levels. On the lexical level, literal translation is adopted to deal with technical terms and compound words.Common words tend to show their special meanings in the ecotourism text, requiring the translator to distinguish their meanings in the context. On the phrasal level, nominalization and apposition are quite common in the ecotourism texts,in which conversion and amplification are two frequently-used methods to address nominalization.Besides,a series of effective translation strategies are suggested on the syntactic level, including addition and omission, changes of syntactic order as well as combination and division of sentences. The passive sentence can be translated into the active, passive or judgmental sentence in the target language according to its specific meaning. In addition, the translatorshould give more emphasis on metaphorical phrases which make the source text more vivid and engaging. The objective of this report is to sum up translation problems in the translation project of ecotourism and put forward corresponding solutions under the theoretical guidance of Skopos Theory.Instructive references are proposed for later translators dealing with the homogeneous text. |
