A Report On English-chinese Translation Of Biomedical Science Texts Under The Functional Equivalence Theory

This report is going to describe the utilization of functional equivalence in biomedical science fields and take the version of Cecil Textbook of Medicine as the example to explain the main research question.The aim of functional equivalence is to ensure the translation and the original text to keep functionally equivalent in language function rather than language form.Therefore,Nida’s functional equivalence theory puts more emphasis on the feelings of the target language readers,and it requires the translators to consider the feelings of the readers when translating instead of being limited by the language structure of the original author,especially the sentence structure of the original text.In this paper,Nida’s functional equivalence theory is selected to adjust and transform the text from the internal stylistic,syntactic,textual and lexical aspects;a smooth and fluent translation can meet the reading habits of target language readers.Studies confirm that functional equivalence releases structural requirements of biomedical translation,which should be followed in the process of the whole translation steps.According to the principle of functional equivalence,the translation techniques of literal translation,free translation,reorganization,conversion are flexibly adopted to ensure the quality and quantity of the translation of Cecil Textbook of Medicine.This translation report mainly includes five parts: The first part describes the translation task,including the introduction of biomedical text and translation background,the second part is the description of translation procedure,which includes features derived from the text,pre-translation preparation and post-translation proofreading.The third part is the introduction of translation theory,including the main content and application status of functional equivalence.The fourth part is theory case study,the cases are analyzed from lexical,syntactic and textual aspects,and the translation methods adopted in translation practice are discussed in detail.And the last part summarizes the findings and shortcomings in translation practice.
