A Report On C-E Translation Of The Folklore Of The Zhuang People(Chapter ? And Chapter ?)

Chinese culture is not only profound and broad in content but also marked by its long history.Against the backdrop of Reform and Opening Up,“Going Global” of Chinese culture is not the sole objective any more.“Becoming More Influential” is another goal to be attained.Therefore,foreign translation of Chinese culture is born right now.Quintessence of traditional culture is an important material for translation concerning foreign translation of Chinese culture.It is also true to those less influential culture such as culture of Chinese ethnic minorities.With the largest population among ethnic minorities in southwestern part of China,the Zhuang People is endowed with unique and splendid folk culture in particular.Multifarious cultural carriers like mysterious beliefs and admiration,resounding folk songs,elaborate handicrafts,etc.have all been passed down from ancient times till now.Nevertheless,to many people,their cognition and understanding of Zhuang culture are rather limited.As a significant part in the field of foreign translation of Chinese culture,international publicity translation on ethnic minorities represents the image of China.Thus,it is quite necessary for us to carry out studies on international publicity translation on ethnic minorities so that we can contribute to the construction of “Country with abundant cultural resources for output” and “Country with most powerful cultural influence”.The source text is selected from The Folklore of the Zhuang People compiled by Huang Weijing and Huang Guiqiu in 2012.Chapter Four “Colorful Annual Celebrations” and Chapter Five “Affectionate Songs on Marriage and Love” are selected for the English translation.Abundant in cultural terms and profound in meanings,these two chapters demonstrate pictures of unique Zhuang festivals,marriage and love customs to readers.Guided by the Translation Variation Theory raised by Prof.Huang Zhonglian,the writer discussed her flexible handling of the source text based on the proper utilization of seven adaptations(addition,deletion,editing,narration,condensation,combination and rewriting)according to textual contexts so that quintessence of Zhuang cultural information can be conveyed,and readability of target text can be enhanced.Five Chapters in total are included in this report.Chapter One focuses on introduction to the purpose and significance of the report;main content of the book as well as the whole layout organization.Chapter Two is about pre-translation process where an analysis on source text,utilization of parallel text and translation tools as well as team work were illustrated.The author looked back on current situation of English translation research concerning Chinese ethnic minorities and the Zhuang People and explained the system of Translation Variation Theory in Chapter Three.Chapter Four is concerned with case study,and concrete examples were selected to examine real application and effective use of these adaptations.Chapter Five mainly draws a conclusion on this translation practice and discussed the author's findings and deficiency in this report.
