The Study Of Shen Shiyou And His Writings

Shen Shiyou was a famous poet and inkstone collector at Changshu in the late Qing Dynasty.He was fond of inkstone and poetry all his life.Wu Changshuo and Qian Zhonglian highly praised his talent.His writings mainly consisted of poems and essays,especially poems.There are more than 1300 poems and 5 articles,which are extensive and varied with strong realism style,like Du Fu’s "history of poetry".This study has great value to the study of Changshu’s artistic and literary development in the late Qing Dynasty.There are seven parts in this paper.In the preface,the current research situation of Shen Shiyou and his writings is analyzed,and its shortcomings are clarified.There are few studies on his family,friendship or writings.Therefore,the first chapter of this article combs his family life to lay a foundation for the study of his friendship and writings.The second chapter examines Shen Shiyou’s contacts with friends in literary,artistic and political circles,and summarizes their important influence on Shen Shiyou’s poetry and painting attainments and reputation dissemination.The third chapter gives a overview of Shen Shiyou’s writings from two aspects of poetry and articles.His most poems are concentrated in Mingjianbaizhai Poetry,and few are distributed in The Inkstone Rubbings of Shen Clan and The Genealogy of Shen Clan at Yuyang.There are one miscellaneous and four memorial inscriptions.The chapter four focuses on Shen Shiyou’s poetry from three aspects: poetry technique,poetry ideological content and poetry artistic characteristics.Firstly,it analyzes that Shen Shiyou has studied writing skills from Du Fu,Wang Anshi and Chen Shidao;secondly,it discusses the thought and content of Shen Shiyou’s poems from five parts: national calamity and people’s livelihood,recording of travel and chanting of reses,inscriptions on paintings and inkstones,the singing of poetry between friends and the elegy.Lastly,it studies the artistic features from four aspects: style of poetry,genre,conception and language.The fifth chapter discusses the ideological content and artistic characteristics of Shen Shiyou’s articles.His articles have proper narration,sincere feelings,are not worse than the poetry.The concluding part summarizes the historical value,literary value and artistic value of Shen Shiyou’s writings,and clarifies his position in Changshu literary circle in the late Qing Dynasty.This paper is a systematic study of Shen Shiyou and his writings on the basis of collating Mingjianbaizhai Poems.In the process of research,I strive to be comprehensive,accurate,in-depth and enriched in order to excavate the value of his works,enhance people’s understanding about him,to show Shen Shiyou’s reputation,and provide reference for the future research of him.
