This is an English-Chinese translation report. The selected source text is excerpted from the first two chapters of Genghis Khan and the Mongol War Machine.Chris Peers, the author of the book, mainly focuses on the history of world war.In this book,he introduces the military and cultural background of the Mongols, and analyses from many aspects the reasons why Genghis Khan and the Mongol army won the victory. The chapters selected by the translator mainly introduce Genghis Khan's world and his process of uniting the grassland tribes. It provides a more reliable basis for the study of Mongolian military history. The original text belongs to historical works, involving a large number of historical and cultural information. The translator has consulted a large number of parallel texts and checked the names of persons, places and culture-loaded words of the Mongols in order to convey the original information more accurately. This report mainly consists of four chapters.Chapter One gives a brief account of the translation background, significance, objective and structure of the report.Chapter Two introduces the source text and its author Chris Peers.Chapter Three is the key part of this report. This chapter analyses the translation difficulties and corresponding translation methods,including(1)the translation of culture-loaded words;(2)the translation of proper nouns;(3)the translation of content after dashes;and(4)the translation of long sentences. This report mainly adopts the following translation methods to solve the above difficulties.(1)Transliteration and annotation are used to translate culture-loaded words.(2)Adoption of established translation is used to deal with most of the proper nouns. In view of the different meanings of some proper nouns in different contexts, semantic extension is used to translate such words in this report.(3)For content after dashes, the methods of omission, replacing dashes with other Chinese words and punctuations are adopted,so as to make the translation conform to the Chinese expression habits and more readable for the target readers.(4)In the process of translating, this report mainly adopts two translation methods to deal with long sentences: following the original syntactic order and reinventing sentence structures.Chapter Four summarizes the experience gained from this translation practice and the limitations in this translation report.
