The French narrative musical Romeo and Juliet,based on Shakespeare's classical plays,is the most successful love story of "Roju" adapted from the field of musicals.It is also a masterpiece of French musicals since the new century.It is composed by Gerard Presgurvic,the French master of music,and it has aroused worldwide music since its debut in 2001.The theatre market,so far,has always been performing.The success of the musical lies not only in the circulation and attraction of the story itself,but also in its unique stage interpretation,which is the form of "telling" or "showing" the classic story.Musical,as a stage performance and theatrical art,has comprehensive characteristics different from opera and drama.It contains many elements,such as drama,music,dance and stage.Although each element has different artistic styles and functions,it serves for the narrative of the plot in the play,and has the functions of shaping characters,promoting plot and setting off atmosphere.Using the method of text analysis,combined with narratology,semiotics and other related theories,this paper focuses on the three issues of "who narrates","what narrates" and "how to narrate" in the musical Romeo and Juliet,and tries to explore its creative law and artistic value.It is concluded that Romeo and Juliet,as a narrative musical,has achieved both reservations and innovations,as well as individuality and commonality in the narrative process,and truly achieved the perfect integration of classical stories and artistic forms.The narrative subject headed by Gerard Presgurvic is the framer of the play and the conceiver and presenter of its artistic effect.Guided by continuing classics and adapting appropriately,they not only continue the content that has resonated with people in Shakespeare's works for a long time,but also make some ingenious adjustments in combination with real life and French culture.In terms of narrative means,the play plays an important role in portraying characters,promoting plots,setting off atmosphere and deepening themes on the basis of fully grasping the requirements and characteristics of the four elements of drama poetry,music,dance and dance beauty.This paper is divided into six chapters to elaborate: the first chapter is anoverview of the musical narrative context,including the social and historical reasons for the production of the play,the realistic background and the comparison of the two versions in different contexts;The second chapter is the analysis of the narrative subject of the play,including the overt narrator represented by the actors and the covert narrator represented by the behind-the-scenes personnel such as the director.The third chapter mainly elaborates the narrative content of the play from three aspects: narrative accident,narrative characters and narrative theme;The fourth chapter,according to the general structure of drama narrative,divides the plot layout and narrative arrangement of the play according to the structure of beginning,development,climax and ending,and discusses the content of each part in detail.The fifth chapter,from the four elements of musical-drama poetry,music,dance,stage,respectively,discussed these forms of expression in the narrative of the specific embodiment and role,and summarize the story and narrative techniques between the link;The sixth chapter,on the basis of summarizing the successful experience of French musical Romeo and Juliet,puts forward some suggestions combined with the development status quo of local musical in China.
