For scholars of Shakespeare,Romeo and Juliet is of profound literary heritage and of great research value.Xiron Books is the first to introduce to China the Oxford Shakespeare series, among which Romeo and Juliet is high on the agenda for publication. The introduction to and the annotation of the book were written by the famous Shakespeare scholar Jill L.Levenson and were to be translated by a team led by Mr.Gu Shaoyang. This translation report is based on the E-C translation project of the translation of the introduction to and the annotation of Romeo and Juliet. The report,by centering on paratext, and refering to the theory of paratexts proposed by the French literary critic Gérard Genet, analyzes the functions and meanings of paratexts.Given that the source texts are informative and scholarly, the author classifies the paratexts into three types, analyzes one by one their features and difficulties in translation and put forward the corresponding strategies of translation.Chapter one introduces briefly the project and its procedure;Chapter two deals with the theory of paratexts and elaborates on the difficulties in translating paratexts in this project;Chapter three is a case study which analyses in detail selected examples through four translation strategies.Chapter four concludes the report, summarizing and reviewing its achievements and shortcomings, with a view to providing reference for the translation of similar texts and making limited contributions to the study of the translation of paratexts.
