An E-C Translation Report Based On TRADOS

As a branch of EST,translation of chemistry English texts has always been one of the most difficult fields in translation studies due to the involvement of too many terms,strong specialty,esoteric words,etc.But with the advancement of science and technology and development of the era,the moderm translation-assisted tools have a great impact on the translation activities.TRADOS,the leading one in this field,has played a positive role in promoting translation activities.Based on the project Spectroscopic Methods in Organic Chemistry,the author of the present translation report selects a length of about 15,000 words both as the translation material and study object for the present translation report.Through specific examples,this report analyzes the key points worth discussing and the means used in the translation process from three aspects at the linguistic level,namely,"the lexical level","the syntactic level",and "the textual level".At the technical level,the author shares his solutions to three important problems in the application of TRADOS.Through illustrations,the present translation report elaborates on the translation process under TRADOS by expounding the necessary procedures needed in TM,TB,proofreading,typesetting,etc.,so as to objectively evaluate the translation of chemistry English texts under the environment of TRADOS.By way of exemplification and illustration,the report indicates the following:Firstly,TRADOS can greatly improve the translation efficiency after being used skillfully,owing to the fact that its comprehensive functions can not only eliminate repetitive workload,but also realize sharing of TM and TB.Secondly,TRADOS is suitable for engineering and technical documents.Finally,for the fact that TRADOS has to take into account the different needs of various groups,despite its efficiency,the complicated operation steps and procedures brought by its powerful functions may bring considerable inconvenience to users.All in all,since cumbersome settings are needed to realize commonly used functions like TM,TB,translation matching rates,tagging,paragraph layout,post-translation reviewing,etc.,mastering the application skills of TRADOS is an essential proficiency for high-quality translators so as to adequately improve the auxiliary functions of the auxiliary translation tool.It is hoped that this translation report could offer some tips for the translation of chemical English texts,deepen the understanding of people on computer-aided software,and promote the international cooperation and communication in the field of chemical industry.
