Chen Xianzhang,a great Confucian scholar,was the only one person of Guangdong to be elevated to sainthood and thus be honored in the Confucian Temple.He established the great historic “Jiangmen School” which not only comes from “Neo-Confucianism” and results in“Yang-ming's Theory”,playing a leading role for the transformation of the academic habits in Ming dynasty.As the initiator of a new style,Chen Xianzhang is not only an outstanding educator and poet,but also a calligrapher with special contributions in Lingnan area.His original Maolong brush and Maolong calligraphy has become a brilliant stroke in the history of Chinese calligraphy.While spreading his own academic thoughts,Chen Xianzhang also brought the style of Maolong with strong Lingnan characteristics to the north,and his calligraphy aesthetic thought played a positive role in changing the backward situation due to ideologism at that time.After Ming and Qing dynasty,“Jiangmen School” which is centered on Chen Xianzhang as well as his diciples and descendants,is an important symbol of the revitalization of Lingnan calligraphy circle,and his calligraphy aesthetics has a far-reaching influence.The thesis is divided into five chapers.Chapter one mainly elaborates the era and cultural background of Chen Xianzhang,and briefly describes his life experiences,social contacts and several important events affecting his life path.Based on graphic analysis,chapter two compares Chen xianzhang's calligraphy works of three calligraphy periods and summarizes the artistic characteristics and aesthetic practice.Chapter three and chapter four is the core parts of this thesis,mainly talking about the calligraphy of Chen Xianzhang stripping out from his surviving poetry and his unique calligraphy aesthetics concept sorting out from the philosophical thought,and summed up as “disposition reconciliation” as the essence of calligraphy aesthetic essence,“charm” as the pursuit,“natural perch” as the creation concept.By analyzing Chen Xianzhang's calligraphy theory,integrating his growing background and studying experience and era circumstance,this thesis probes into the origin of Chen Xianzhang's calligraphy aesthetics,analyzes the similarities and differences between his calligraphy aesthetics and those of other calligraphers before and after,and reveals the revolutionary role of his unique calligraphy aesthetics brought to the depressed calligraphy circle in the Ming dynasty.Chapter five elaborates the influence of Chen Xianzhang's calligraphy aesthetic thoughts on the inheritance and development of “Jiangmen School”,the role of enlightenment and influence for “WumenSchool”,and the continuous inheritance of Maolong Calligraphy style.The thesis specifically lists some typical calligraphers who are influenced or inspired by Chen Xianzhang's thoughts on calligraphy and fine arts to analyze and argue,so that readers can not only have a clearer understanding of the theoretical value of Chen Xianzhang's thoughts,but also realize the era significance of its theoretical innovation and its more realistic theoretical value.This thesis summarizes Chen Xianzhang's aesthetic thoughts of calligraphy and affixes its thought liberation function and influence on the development of calligraphy in the Mid-Ming dynasty.Combined with the current reality,the thesis discusses the value of his calligraphy aesthetic thought to the development of contemporary calligraphy art,and gives Chen Xianzhang's calligraphy aesthetic thought a proper position in contemporary calligraphy circle.
