| A good construction of national image could do great help to the promotion of China’s international status and possible cooperation with other countries, which makes the study of China’s Image extremely urgent and important.Among all the channels, mass media is a main channel for wide dissemination of China’s image.Since newspaper has mainly been replaced by network media nowadays, online news are playing a much more important role in helping people getting to know about other countries, especially those who barely have chance to visit other countries. At the same time, the function of websites being able to memorize the feedback from netizens made it possible to study the idea of netizens’ about China. As is known to most people, the THAAD Incident happened in 2017 is considered as an important turning point for the relationship between Korea and China, which is the reason why we found it important to study the news widely read by Korean netizens. And the news on Korea’s biggest portal site NAVER in one year after the outbreak of THAAD thus became the items for study. We adopted the framework of “Source text” and“Flow text” to present the interactive relationship between the news and comments. At the same time, the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis and Intertextuality are taken as the basis for studying. The overall image of China depicted in the widely-read news can be concluded as: A country enjoying rapid development of science and technology and closely related to South Korea’s political interests, security interests and quality of life; The study of “Source text” can be divided into two parts, which is the study of headlines and text. The study of headlines found out that Korea’s media tends to put their subjective understanding of China as the default information in the headlines. For example, they will use Presupposition as a hidden discourse method to accuse China of being unfair in dealing international political relations and causing the air pollution. The study of news text found out that “quotation” is a widely used way to stress the objectivity of news. The media mainly manipulate the quotation by selecting the material being used and differentiating ways of source annotation and retelling. The speech of the spokesman of Chinese Foreign Ministry is most frequently quoted to show the attitude of China, which mainly appeared as lacking sincerity but tending to take strong attitude in controvosial issues. In the study of“Flow text”,we studied the “mood index” the netizens chose and the comments they left after they finished. They “mood index” showed that they were mainly angry about the news related to China. The study of comments parts were divided into two parts. One is studying if the netizens commented in a dominant or recessive way,and the other is studying if they try to convince other people by making a judgement or emotional invitation. In this part,China’s image was mainly depicted as: A country who supported and will support North Korea in every way, posing threat to the security interests and rights of South Korea, appearing as lack of sincerity in controversial issues, showing rudeness in sanctions, bringing environmental problems to other countries, accustomed to imitating South Korea culturally, and not worthy of the title of Great Power.China’s image in the “Source text” and “Flow text” shows a high degree of consistency and there is a clear intertextual relationship between them. The consistency is mainly marked through internal intertextual markers such as references, and external intertextual markers such as discourse markers、reference forms 、ending mark. The Division of the image in the two text lies in the point that Korean media has shown a great concern and affirmation to China’s scientific and technological strength, while the netizens cared more about if China is conducive to Korea’s security interests and quality of life.By linguistic analysis, this study visualized and concretized the process of constructing Chinese image.More importantly,it demonstrated how China’s image was depicted and accepted in the year after the outbreak of THAAD incident.Based on the result of the study,we made some pieces of suggestions on how China can express itself more appropriately and improve our self-image.Though we tried to explore how news and comments discourses convey ideology, this is no doubt that a more sound and complete explanation will take more material and more in-depth linguistic analysis. |
