This translation report is based on the translation of Chapters One to Five of An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz.The book presents the history of indigenous peoples who were persecuted by the European settlers from the perspective of reality.This text belongs to the historical biography in biography literature which combines the characteristics of informative texts and expressive texts.With such characteristics,in order to achieve the perfect combination of content and form,the author should not only ensure the reality of the original text content,but also reflect the literary aesthetic value of the original.Therefore,the author has written a translation report on these issues.Then,the representation of the reality of the original content is mainly embodied in three levels,which include semantics,syntax as well as history and culture.The author adopts some techniques to deal with these three aspects,such as “Semantic Extension”,“splitting and recasting”,“adding annotations”,and so on.As for the reproduction of literary aesthetics,the author divides it into self-reference and indirect reference in accordance with the characteristics of literary language.Then,the author discusses the issue of self-reference from the perspective of phonetics,and analyzes the other part at the aspects of rhetoric.In order to achieve both the aesthetic purpose and reproduce the writing style of the original text,the author mostly adopts the literal translation method.In addition,there is another key issue to focus on,that is,representation of the authenticity of the literary text.Through the writing of this translation report,the author has a deep understanding of the characteristics of biographical literature,and can solve these issues related to the text features by adopting translation approaches and strategies.It is expected that this report can provide some references and suggestions for future translators of such texts. |
