The Translation Of Hedges In Academic Papers

This translation report,based on the second,fourth and fifth chapters of the monograph on academic paper Resilience Thinking in Urban Planning,describes some translation problems facing the translator and summarizes corresponding solutions.The source text is characterized by strong academic features,rigorous logic and objective statements.In order to achieve objectivity and preciseness of academic text,Hedges are frequently used,which cause great problems to the translator.In the process of translation,the translator should not only retain its particular functions,but also take the writing style of the source text into consideration.Hedges can be divided into two types: approximators and shields.In order to deal with the above problems,the translator mainly adopts free translation method and some translation techniques,such as conversion of parts of speech,syntactical readjustment,extension,addition and omission.After writing this translation report,the translator has a more comprehensive understanding of Hedges.In the meantime,this report offers some corresponding solutions to the translation of Hedges in academic text through some typical cases,attempting to provide certain references for the translation of such text in the future.
