In 2003,the Ministry of Education promulgated the English Curriculum Standard for Senior High School,which provided guidance and suggestions for English teachers of senior high schools.The new curriculum indicates that English textbooks are the core part of English curriculum resources,and play a vital role in English teaching.With the change of curriculum standards,English textbooks are also constantly improved in order to meet the requirements of the new curriculum standards better.Well-known experts from home and abroad compiled a textbook of Advance with English by Yilin Press under the guidance of the new Curriculum Standard.In 2005,this textbook was promoted and widely used in Jiangsu province.Word power section is a vital part of English vocabulary teaching in senior high school,which is considered as a reflection of teaching concepts and principles in the Standard.The relevant research on this section is very little.Therefore,the author decides to investigate and research the vocabulary teaching in word power section in senior high schools to learn about the real teaching situation of word power.On the basis of the new concept of curriculum,the research questions are: How do teachers understand and teach word power section? How do students understand and learn this section?Based on the theory of chunk learning and the input and output theory of second language acquisition,this thesis attempts to do a survey on the use of word power section by means of questionnaire,interview and classroom observation.After this investigation,the author finds that in the actual teaching process,some teachers are not aware of the importance of word power,and some teachers even ignore this section.Meanwhile,students hold the view that this section embodies the strategy of vocabulary learning,but it is difficult to apply the vocabulary learning strategy to the actual learning process,and it is difficult to master the vocabulary in word power section.To solve these problems,this thesis puts forward the corresponding improvement strategies: studying the curriculum standards and combining teaching and curriculum standard;creative use of materials and reasonable integration of teaching materials according to the requirements of teaching to optimize the teaching resources;strengthening and improving the professional development of teachers.In this way,the teaching of this section is more reasonable and effective.
