A Report On The Translation Of The Power Of The Word:The Secret Code Of Creation (Chapter One-Five)

The translation material of this report is chosen from the famous book The Power of the Word: the Secret Code of Creation written by Donald Tyson, a renowned Canadian writer, who majors in science first but turns to pursue writing career later.He dives into studying the art of magic and publishes quite a few books about occultism. He attempts to formulate an accessible system of personal training composed of East and West, past and present, which will help the individual discover the reason for one’s existence and a way to fulfill it. The source text of this translation comes from Chapter I to V of this book, introducing the knowledge of“Tetragrammaton”: the history of the Name, its ancient and modern derivative meanings, the correspondences between its single letter and modern magic, its mathematical meaning and its invoking methods.This report, at lexical and syntactic levels, conducts a comparatively detailed summary of some difficulties on the process of translation and translation techniques.In view of these problems, I give a consideration and analysis from the perspective of translation shifts and functional equivalence. The main body of this report consists of four chapters. Chapter One, Task Description, includes an introduction to the book and the author and a text-type analysis of the translation material. Chapter Two,Process Description, involves preparation before translating, process of translating and quality control. Chapter Three, Case Study, is the main body of this report. It theoretically analyzes the source text at word and sentence levels respectively and attempts to solve the problems I encountered in this translation practice by the ways such as class shift, negation, division, etc. Chapter Four, Conclusion, sums up the difficulties and inspirations from the translation practice.
