In the early period of the empire(A.D.1-2),the unprecedented and extremely developed public recreational activities in Rome were inseparable from the social background and social conditions in the early period of the empire.This paper aims to discuss the development of several major public recreational activities in early imperial Rome,including gladiator RACES,racing cars,baths,plays and banquets,as well as their influences on Roman society,in an attempt to provide some references for understanding the early imperial society.This paper consists of three parts.The first part is the introduction.According to the materials collected by the author,the research status at home and abroad is sorted out,and the research overview of public recreational activities in early imperial Rome is elaborated.The second part is the main body of the paper,which mainly explains the development and social impact of five public recreational activities,including gladiator racing,racing,bathing,drama and theater,and banquets.One,gladiatorial contest.Gladiatorial contests,full of blood and violence,are the most popular public recreational activities in Rome,and their negative impact on Roman society can be seen from their obsession with gladiatorial contests.Racing.With its vast racing grounds and large number of participants,what used to be a competitive sporting event has become a frenzied entertainment activity in Rome,with the highest popularity and great influence.Three,take a bath.Bath,bath is another public entertainment activities with outstanding Roman characteristics,the Romans all day long to linger in the bath,is not the general meaning of "bath",entertainment and immoral among them.The development of bath and bath buildings benefited from the Roman construction technology,as well as the Roman water supply and drainage technology.Drama and theater.Roman drama originated from Greece.With the help of superb architectural techniques and unique building materials,the grandeur of Roman theater provided new forms of entertainment and space for Romans,but in terms of educational significance and artistry,Rome was far inferior to Greece.Five,banquet.The Romans regarded feasting as an entertainment activity,which reflected the integration of "eating,drinking and having fun" and manifested the life mentality of the slaveholders.The third part is composed of two parts.The first part elaborates the general understanding of public entertainment activities in the early imperial Rome,and through the study of public entertainment activities,analyzes the causes and influences of slave-owner aristocracy's luxurious life,corruption and moral decline in the early imperial period.The conclusion of the second part summarizes the discussion of the whole paper and emphasizes the slaveholders' exploiting class nature of various public recreational activities in Rome and the "alienation" of public recreational activities.
