With the continuous development of China’s reform and opening up and the process of building a socialist legal country,the law has received more and more attention in modern society.Since China joined the WTO,China’s economic links with other countries have been strengthened and the number of foreign cases has inevitably increased.Under such circumstances,the construction of the legal system is put on the agenda and the importance of legal translation is also highlighted.China needs to learn from countries with excellent legal systems to improve our laws and promote the quality and the taking effect of the law.While legal translation plays an increasingly important role.In this report,the author analyzes and summarizes the translation practice of excerpted Mining Act 1978 Western Australia.Australia is a country with excellent written statutes among countries with Anglo-American legal system.Understanding laws of Australia can be useful for the improvement of our legal system.Through translating and learning Australia’s mining law,on the one hand,the author wants to improve her own skills of legal translation and broaden her horizon of legal translation.On the other hand,the author hopes this translation practice can provide a reference for the students like the author who is interested in legal translation and wants to improve translation skills.On the third hand,this legal translation practice may also provide a reference of legal system for the coming into operation of mining law and the improvement of it in China.This report is divided into four chapters.Chapter One is the translation task description,including the task background and the nature of the task.Chapter Two is a general introduction of the translation practice process,including pre-translation,the translation process and post-translation proofreading.At the same time,the author prepares the translation principles and strategy used in the pre-translation.The principles include accurate and rigorous;clear and concise;consistent;formal.The strategy is Nida’s functional equivalence theory.Chapter Three is the main body of the report.The author does a textual analysis,introduces the translation of four types of words,including archaisms,common words with legal meanings,the modal verb-“shall” and parallel synonyms.The mainmethods used are context-oriented,amplification and omission.The author also introduces the translation of sentences with parentheses and compound sentences.The main method is disassembly.What’s more,the author summarizes some typical structures and sentences in legal English that appear in the text,including “subject to structure”,“notwithstanding structure”,“except structure”,“without structure”,“if sentence” and “where sentence”.Chapter Four summarizes the post-translation effect,including post-translation rethinking,the author’s shortcomings and the improvement she needs to make in the future.
