As globalization deepens with China playing an increasingly important role, there is a growing demand for Chinese-English interpreting in economic, political and cultural communication between China and the rest of the world.Interpreting is a special kind of translation with its own characteristics.First,it allows a very short time f'or rendering and thus imposes high pressure on the interpreter's cognitive processing capacity.Second, when the speaker gives an impromptu speech, there can be information redundancy or blurred logic in the source language. The "New Economy Principle" addresses the problems mentioned above by optimizing the distribution of linguistic resources and improving brevity. Therefore,it is important for improving interpreting quality. With the;"New Economy Principle" as the theoretical guideline and the author's field Chinese-English consecutive interpreting as the case study material, this thesis discusses the application of the 5 maxims of the "New Economy Principle",namely "the maxim of general equilibrium","the maxim of common premises","the maxim of satisfaction adequacy","the maxim of conformity" and "the maxim of the effectiveness of speech" in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting. This thesis is intended to explore the application of the New Economy Principle in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting and provide some practical reference for improving the quality of Chinese-English consecutive interpreting.
