| This paper is a report on the English-Chinese translation practice of"Pragmatics, context and relevance",Chapter 1 of Cyberpragmatics:Internet-mediated Comm-unication in Context(Yus,2011).This report concretely describes the translation practice from four aspects:description of the translation task, description of translation procedures, case studies and summary of the translation practice.Based on previous studies by other scholars and on the translator’s practice, this report aims to explore the translation techniques of academic texts,to improve translation skills and to accumulate experience for translation tasks in the future.Through the translation practice,it is found that preparation before translation, comprehension of the original text, organization of the translated text and revision after translation are four indispensable steps for academic discourse translation.Besides, the ability of language transformation and paradigm shift between English and Chinese should be applied throughout the process of translation. In order to solve the problems in translation caused by different styles of writing between English and Chinese, the translator resorts to the framework of grammatical metaphor theory and demetaphorizes the text in words, sentences and discourse respectively through such translation strategies as word class conversion, sentence structure reorganization, information enrichment, and in so doing,a clear and coherent translated text faithful to the original can arguably be secured. |
