| A study of legislative discourse and its translation stands at the crossroads of threedomains——legal theory, linguistic theory and translation theory. This dissertation focuses on thecontrastive analysis of grammatical metaphor used in Chinese and English legislative texts, andConstitution of People's Republic of China and Constitution of United States of America are takenas the analysis samples. Moreover, the analysis contributes to the further study on translationpractice. On the adoption of grammatical metaphor (GM) in Chinese and English legislative texts,the author carries out this study on the basis of the widely accepted theory of Systematic-functionalGrammar developed by Halliday. Then, based on the findings of the analysis, the author conductsthe study on how we combine the translation theory "Equivalence" with the translation practice inlegislative texts. The dissertation attempts to give the answers to how GM is used and translated inthe legislative texts, and functions of GM used in the legislative texts are mentioned as well.The main body of this paper can be divided into six chapters. Chapter1 gives someintroductory remarks on metaphor, grammatical metaphor and legislative texts and data collectionprocedures. Chapter 2 summarizes the Halliday's theory on GM from ideational, interpersonal andtextual aspects. Then the author discriminates ideas on legal language, legal texts and legislativetexts in Chapter 3. Based on the aboye chapters, Chapter 4 reaches the point on the contrastivestudy and analysis of GM applied in English and Chinese legislative texts. On the basis of threeabovementioned aspects of GM, detailed analysis and findings have been mentioned on functionsand similarities, differences of GM used in English -Chinese legislatives texts respectively. Thelanguage analysis contributes a lot to the study of translation practice in Chapter 5, which discussesthe translation of GM in legislative texts guided by "Equivalence" theory. The last Chapter offers abrief summary, and certain suggestions for further study. |
