A Study On Interpreters’ Subjectivity In Community Interpreting Under The Guidance Of The Cooperative Principle

Against the background of fast globalization,interaction between different nations occurs more frequently and the demand for interpreting also soars in all areas of life.Apart form interpreting service for diplomatic and business occasions,a new form of interpreting—community interpreting is on the rise.It has become an indispensable service for people who live or work in a foreign country.This thesis focuses on this emerging field.Taking the Cooperative Principle as theoretical framework,it explores how community interpreters’ exercising of subjectivity helps to promote efficient transmission of information and achieve better communicative effect.Firstly,this thesis discusses the definition and characteristics of community interpreting and introduces the present situation of community interpreting in China.There is more complex interaction and dynamics among participants in community interpreting.Moreover,it involves a wider range of topics.These all pose new challenges to community interpreters.Secondly,this thesis discusses the meaning of interpreters’ subjectivity.It starts from the concept of subjectivity in philosophy and explains subjectivity’s meaning and functioning mechanism in interpreting and translation.Interpreters’ subjectivity emphasizes the initiative of interpreters.On the basis of respecting source language,interpreters can fully exploit their cognitive ability and various resources to efficiently transmit message and promote communication.Finally,this thesis discusses the Cooperative Principles’ powerful guidance on community interpreting.Community interpreting occurs in public service institutions.The complex interaction and the sharing of an interactional goal make it more similar to daily conversation.Thus,all participants are expected to observe the Cooperative Principle for efficient communication.The exercising of community interpreters’ subjectivity can help ensure all sides observe the four maxims of the Cooperative Principle,thus help to achieve successful communication.
