An Analysis Of "Cooperative Principle" And "Politeness Principle" In Consecutive Interpreting

Interpreting serves as a bridge in different languages,prompts cultural exchange and business among different language groups and makes great contribution to development and prosperity of humans.As the globalization deepens,all kinds of large-scale meeting,business activities and diplomatic activities need the participation of interpreters.Consecutive interpreting is widely used in many fields,such as speech,lecture and news briefing.Consecutive interpreting is a major field in interpreting study.This paper is a report based on author’s field practice as an interpreter.Based on previous studies and reflection of author’s field practice,the author analyzes the application of Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle in consecutive interpreting and discusses the practical interpreting strategies compared with the revised interpreting texts.This paper adopts case study method and translating comparison method.Through analyzing interpreting materials,this paper summarizes the application of Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle to shed some light on learners of consecutive interpreting.This paper puts forward more appropriate translation and interpreting strategies by comparing spot translation with afterthought translation.The study shows that interpreters would sometimes break Cooperative Principe to abide by Politeness Principle.This paper discusses three interpreting strategies:amplification,omission and seeking help.This paper also points out the good attributes of an interpreter,including bilingual language competence,professional linguistic strength,good interpersonal skill,quick responding capacity and rich field experience.This paper reaches a conclusion that with the guidance of Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle,three parties can reach a sound pragmatic communication,eliminate conflict and increase acceptance.
