A Report On Tour Escort Interpreting Under The Guidance Of The Cooperative Principle

As the general rule to guide people's conversation,the Cooperative Principle put forward by Grice plays a fundamental role in pragmatics.With gradual application of the Cooperative Principle in various areas of people's life,an increasing number of scholars have been studying the application of the Cooperative Principle in interpreting.Their studies focus on different aspects,like conference interpreting,business interpreting and so forth,but few scholars focused on tour escort interpreting.Furthermore,in their studies of the application of the Cooperative Principle in interpreting,they only discussed that strict observance of the Cooperative Principle could help interpreters improve their interpreting quality,ignoring the occasions where people would violate the Cooperative Principle.In real communication,people do not always strictly observe the Cooperative Principle,and sometimes they deliberately violate the Cooperative Principle for specific purposes.When they violate the Cooperative Principle,conversational implicature will occur.This report,based on the interpreter's personal tour escort interpreting experience with a guide and a foreign tourist,comprehensively analyzes the application of the Cooperative Principle in tour escort interpreting from the perspectives of both observance and violation of the principle and reaches a conclusion that observance of the Cooperative Principle can improve interpreting quality and on some occasions,violation of the Cooperative Principle can guarantee smooth communication by overcoming ambiguity and misunderstandings as a result of differences between Chinese and Western cultures and languages.This report is divided into six chapters:the first chapter is an introduction to the report,also including the structure of this report;the second chapter is a description of the tour escort interpreting task with respect to information about the activity and the requirements of the task;the third chapter is the interpreter's preparation for the task;the fourth chapter is theoretical framework in which introduction to escort interpreting and the Cooperative Principle,the application of the Cooperative Principle in the reality and studies on the application of the Cooperative Principle in interpreting are demonstrated;the fifth chapter is analyses of the application of the Cooperative Principle as a guide and a helper to improve interpreting quality and solve problems in tour escort interpreting from the perspectives of observance and violation of the Cooperative Principle;the sixth chapter is conclusion which includes feedback of clients,the interpreter's reflection on the Cooperative Principle and suggestions for interpreters and interpreting studies.
