Katsushika Hokusai is a painter of the Edo period in Japan, well known as the originator of modern comics and animation. He was highly praised in Japan and even in the world, which caused the phenomenon of "Japonisme".His masterpiece"Hokusai manga",known as the "Encyclopedia of Ukiyo-e Art" and has been selling well for more than 200 years. The target text of this translation practice,"Hokusai manga-amazing dynamic" is a book that focuses on the "dynamics" in the "Hokusai Manga" which have not been described specifically before. This book reviewed the painting skills of Hokusai,a painter of the Edo era, through a comprehensive analysis of the "dynamic" that amazed Western artists from seventeen chapters, such as stepping, blowing, forging, flow, swimming and the other. As a literary and artistic text with the theme of art appreciation, the language style of this book is neither as straightforward as a social science text, nor as ups and downs as a literary text.Instead, the writer uses lots of vivid descriptions of"dynamic" in Hokusai's paintings to demonstrate many social and cultural elements of the Edo period in Japan. The author was fortunate to participate in the Chinese translation practice of the book under the guidance of the supervisor. This translation practice has horned the author's translation skills on the one hand, and cultivated a keen interest on the art of the Edo period on the other hand.Since the focus of this book is to analyze the dynamics in the paintings of Hokusai, the term "dynamic" has appeared repeatedly. From the natural scenery of wind, rain, thunder and lightning, mountains and rivers to the production scenes of human society, martial arts scenes and so on,the dynamic contained in this book has both commonness and uniqueness. How to make the translation naturally reproduce this kind of "dynamic",and how to let the readers experience the superb skills of the master Hokusai as if they were in the scene are the difficulties of this translation. The theoretical framework of this report is the Skopos theory proposed by Hans Vermeer in 1978.As an important branch of German functional translation theory,it claims that translation is a kind of purposeful behavior, and translators should follow the three principles:the law of purpose, the law of coherence and the law of faithfulness. The proposal of Skopos theory is a milestone in the history of translation studies. As a methodology,it has theoretical guiding significance in translation practice and can explain the specific problems encountered in concrete practice. Therefore, the author re-examined the translation work from this perspective, and tried to summarize the practice process by means of this methodology. This report selects the body part of the book, the seventeen chapters from"Stepping" to "flying" as the target text. This translation research is divided into three parts. The first chapter illustrates the applicability of Skopos theory to this practice based on explaining the textual features and theoretical background of the target text. The second chapter analyses problems encountered in this translation process from three aspects of vocabulary selection, sentence patterns transformation and the processing of action scenes. The third chapter attempts to summarize the specific translation strategies and techniques on the base of analysis,so as to comb Skopos theory once again. The feelings and experience of this practice are also summarized in this chapter.Through analysis and induction,it is summarized as follows.Firstly, skopos theory focuses on the subjectivity and creativity of the translator, and emphasizes the faithfulness between the source language and the target language, the coherence within the target language text, and the purpose of formulating corresponding strategies according to the translation purpose.Secondly,in the process of specific translation practice guided by skopos theory, translators can use translation strategies such as literal translation, free translation, conversion, annotation, ellipsis and addition,or the combinations of the above-mentioned methods according to the actual situations. Finally,in the future, before translation,it is necessary to grasp the essence of the original text on the base of the cultural background, and fully understand the information of the original text.Translators should also fully consider the translation factors such as target audience, and use the expressions in accord with the habits of the target language. After translation, translators should spend a lot of time re-reading the original text and the translation work to eliminate the mistranslation problems, cultural misunderstandings and polish the words and sentences.Only when all three factors are taken into consideration, can the original information be conveyed to readers accurately, naturally and vividly.
