A Study On The C-E Translation Of 2019 GWR From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

In the background of globalization,China’s overall national strength and international status have been significantly improved.At the same time,the demands of all countries in the world to comprehend China are increasingly intensive.As the typical political text,the Report on the Work of the Government(GWR)covers all aspects of China’s political and people’s life,which has become an authoritative information source of the development of China’s national conditions and policy propositions for foreign countries to comprehend China.Therefore,it is of great significance to research the English translation version of GWR.According to the analysis of previous research,there are problems in the English translation of GWR as follows: It is difficult to translate due to the different historical and cultural background between East and West,and the disparity of the Chinese and English language habits as well.How to balance the interpersonal relationship embodied in the process of GWR translation is another issue.According to the above problems,this thesis selects the latest 2019 translation of GWR.Based on the three principles of Skopos theory,which are skopos principle,coherence principle and loyalty principle,to analyze the translation while focusing respectively on discussing the translation strategies and techniques used to tackle the problems when translating the 2019 GWR,concerning the cultural disparities between Chinese and English,linguistic disparities and the ethical limitations among translation participants,hoping to provide appropriate methodological guidance for future translation practice as well.This thesis finally proves that the translation strategies and techniques adopted in the English version of 2019 GWR are consistent with the requirements and connotations of the three principles of Skopos theory,which can reflect the communicative purpose of the translation and realize the expected functions of the target text.The three principles of Skopos theory offer sound theoretical guidance to the translation study of GWR.
